The Republican Road to Recovery
The GOP Alternative Budget
On March 26, 2009, U.S. House Republicans unveiled their budget to bring the country back to fiscal sanity and personal liberty. A few highlights are

Healthcare: Tax incentives to obtain access to coverage - the ability to shop across state lines to purchase affordable policies

Tax code: Marginal tax rate for income up to $100,000 of 10%, and 25% for any income thereafter; generous standard deductions, personal exemptions

Energy policy: Open the Outer Continental Shelf to oil and gas drilling - the Arctic Coastal Plain opened for exploration - obstacles to new nuclear power plants would be removed

Restoring financial stability: Privatize Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac - laws like the Community Reinvestment Act, a major cause of the financial meltdown, would be reformed - would require the Federal Reserve to set a definition of price stability and stick to it over the long term
SD60 Elects New Officers
On Saturday, March 14th, delegates and alternates gathered in the Kenwood Community Center and elected all new officers. The chair of SD60 is now Brandon Ferdig (see his message below), Deputy Chair is Juliette Jordal, the new Secretary is Zhac Wright, and Michael Martens was elected Treasurer. Also, the SD60 constitution was revised creating two new Vice-chair positions, one for each side of the district. Brian Gruber represents the A side, while Andy Cers serves as B side Vice-chair. Welcome to all of you!
SD60 2008 Holiday Party

SD 60 Chair Scott Brooks thanks three special volunteers
While there are too many volunteers to mention by name, I would especially like to thank three who stand out for their extraordinary efforts in Senate District 60 this election season:
Our own Vice-Chair and Secretary, James Patterson, served with great distinction as Chair of the E. Hennepin County Committee for John McCain for President. James' even-handed leadership in this committee shows he has an evident skill at "herding cats". Meow. James was one of the earliest supporters of fellow Naval Academy graduate Senator McCain's bid for the presidency. We all owe him a debt of gratitude for his leadership and strong efforts on behalf of the Republican ticket.
Mary Belfry served as Volunteer Coordinator for McCain for President in E. Hennepin County. She was tireless and inspiring in her creative leadership and support of all our Republican candidates. It's been a real pleasure to get to know Mary over the season, starting especially with a wonderful backyard bonfire where a bunch of us talked into the wee hours about the coming battles. Let there be no doubt that Mary made a difference and we all look forward to getting to know her better in future campaigns. She was omnipresent at all the rallies, door knocks, phone banks, and organizational brainstorming meetings!
Andy Cers pounded the pavement in 60B for Minnesota House candidate, Adam Martin. Andy was a faithful foot soldier, dropping literature, knocking on doors, making phone calls, and not just for the House District campaign, but for all candidates up the ticket. And he throws a great backyard bonfire party! Andy does not just sacrifice his time for the political season, but is a true model of local precinct leadership in his efforts to get to know who are the Republicans in his neighborhood and to bring them into the fold.

Victory in Iraq Day
November 22, 2008
SD60 proudly joins in celebrating Victory in Iraq Day (VID) and we agree that "by every measure, the United States and coalition forces have conclusively defeated all enemies in Iraq, pacified the country, deposed the previous regime, successfully helped to establish a new functioning democratic government, and suppressed any lingering insurgencies. The war has come to an end. And we won." (Source: zombietime.com)

McCain Picks Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin For VP
"Today, John McCain announced his vice president pick, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. With a record of reform, fiscal responsibility and bipartisanship that resembles McCain, Sarah Palin appeals to both the conservative voting base of the Republican party and to independent voters who are looking for independent minded politicians." (Source: MNGOP Blog, August 29, 2008)
MN GOP Presents Their Declaration Of Energy Independence
"The Republicans' plan would remove the blockade against nuclear power, reduce regulations that slowdown development of new energy supplies, provide tax exemptions for alternative energy production and promote ways to develop renewable energy supplies." Press release from Steve Drazkowski, State Representative, District 28B. (Source: Chief, True North, posted 23 August 2008 09:50). Read more.
Democrat Keith Ellison against effort to stop voter fraud
On May 6, 2008, in a Star Tribune op-ed, Keith Ellison decried the Supreme Court decision that upheld Indiana's law that requires a photo ID to vote. Click here to read why Ellison thinks stopping voter fraud is a bad thing. (Source: Star Tribune, May 6, 2008)
Senate District 60 -- Pot Luck Picnic
The Republicans of SD60 held their annual picnic in Kenwood Park on Saturday, June 21st. Our local candidates for office were all there to share a few words on what kind of representation they would bring to our district. All share a platform for lower taxes and limited government intrusions in our lives. Chair, Scott Brooks and Deputy Chair, Doug Daggett called upon volunteers to door knock and phone bank to help get Republicans elected this November by identifying voters.
Get to know our candidate--a success!
We had a very successful fundraiser Tuesday, June 24th, despite a little set back. Our tolerant, open to diversity opposition stole the signs we had posted in the entrance of the building to direct people to the back where the BBQ was being held. I would like to extend my humblest apologies to anyone who fell victim to this work of treachery. Please send me a note at adam@martin08.org if you left because of the missing signs. Also, check back here for information about future events. Thanks to all who came and made this a success!

SD 60 2008 Endorsing Convention Results

Eric

Adam

On May 19, 2008, both Eric Franzen and Adam Martin were unanimously endorsed by SD60 convention delegates to run for the 60A seat occupied by Margaret Kelliher and the 60B seat held by Frank Hornstein, respectively. We're very fortunate to have two articulate and personable young men willing to bring common sense conservative values to a district which has for so long been poorly served by liberal ideologues. Congratulations Eric and Adam! Godspeed!

Governor Pawlenty's Plan to Solve State Budget Deficit
Attempts to mitigate DFL's tax increases, spur economy
Even with the proposed spending reductions, the FY 2008-09 budget would increase by 9.2% over the previous two-year budget. "Minnesotans are concerned about the economy, rising costs and government's seemingly endless demands on their wallets," Governor Pawlenty said. "This plan balances our budget without adding to the burden facing Minnesotans. We'll tackle this deficit by holding government accountable, tightening our belts and using available resources, not by raising taxes." For more details, click here. Massive Democrat Tax Increases Will Hurt Minnesota Families
"By raising the gas tax, the metro wide sales tax and license tab fees by billions of dollars, Democrats hurt Minnesota families and damage our economy. In November, Minnesotans will have a clear choice between the Republicans who oppose these massive tax increases and the Democrats who are adding billions to the tax burden of hard-working Minnesotans. At a time when many Minnesotans are anxious about their economic well being, the last thing we should be doing is raising taxes on already overburdened taxpayers." Republican Party of Minnesota Chairman Ron Carey, February 25, 2008

Chili Party Report
On Thursday night, April 10, over 30 hardy SD60 republicans braved the storm of the century (well, maybe of the week) to share a bowl of chili, lively chatter, and the company of fellow right thinkers! As always, Shirley Carlson's world famous chili was the hit of the evening. It was a wonderful opportunity for old and new faces to meet and judging from the reactions of the attendees, SD60 will be a player in the elections this fall!
